What is a Partnership Group?
Definition
A Partnership Group for Sustainable Development is a coalition of individuals and organizations drawn from the public, private and civil society sectors comitted to taking joint action to achieve social, economic and environmental improvement of a specific geographic area.
Characteristics
The Partnership Group is a local partnership characterised by the specific set of organizational, functional and structural features:
- Membership is voluntary and open to all;
- At least 5 partners representing public, business and civil society sectors are involved
- A specific geographical area of interest is defined in terms of:
- Common economic, social or environmental conditions,
- Shared natural, cultural or historical values; - Tangible effects are achieved through practical action projects and initiatives involving as many partners as possible;
- Local initiatives at the grassroots level are constantly supported;
- Partners share ressources, risk, responsability as well as benefits;
- Common action is based on jointly approved goals and rules (partnership agreement, statute, democratic rules of order, organizational structure);
- Visions, action plans and long-term strategies are developed jointly;
- Impacts are monitored and assessed in relation to progress towards sustainability.
Members
- Public institutions (local governments, cultural institutions, schools, natural parks and reserves, etc.)
- Private partners (enterprises, non-organized individuals, etc.)
- Not-for-profit organizations (associations, foundations, etc.)
Membership should always be voluntary and open to all.
Structure
The Partnership Group, however informal, has some set of principles and procedures which shape the way the partnership will function, develop and make decisions. Although organizational structures differ from one Partnership Group to another, there are some basic components that are always present:

General Assembly of Members - all members of the Partnership Group (organizations and individuals). Role: |

Presidium or Council - democratically elected partnership representatives (leaders) who are the most active and committed to make it success. Role: |

Secretariat - either an existing member organization or a new established organization bringing partners together. Role: |

Working Teams - task groups bringing together partners interested in implementing projects dealing with specific themes (such as tourism, environmental education, cultural heritage protection, enterpreneurship development, etc.). Role: |
